Comtek Jet Engine Inlet Bellmouth
Aiolos recently teamed with Comtek Advanced Structures of Mississauga, Ontario to supply Pratt & Whitney Canada with composite bellmouth assemblies for tests on two new lines of gas turbine engines. Prior to the composite design, Pratt & Whitney traditionally used fabricated aluminum bellmouth assemblies which were heavy and of variable quality. The use of composite material for the test apparatus provides consistent product quality and utilizes a more advanced technology.
Aiolos were responsible for aerodynamic design of the inlet bellmouths including definition of the shape, tolerances and loads. Comtek used their materials expertise to create a lightweight, closely toleranced assembly which is considerably lighter and cost competitive than previous generation bellmouths. The bellmouth aerodynamic design was verified using CFD analysis techniques and airflow to the engine can be accurately measured using an Aiolos designed pressure tap arrangement. Project execution followed a demanding schedule with the first bellmouth available for testing only five months after design work commenced.
